As everything in life is like a coin that has two different sides, people must weigh the pros and cons before jumping to conclusion. After all, each and every question requires careful deliberation in that there are always multiple variables to a truth. Even though some may adamantly believe that watching sports programs and following one's favorite sports team can positively influence on people's lives, I strongly think that such opinion lacks coherence to some extent. In my humble opinion, spending too much of one's resources, whether they are time, money or energy, on watching sports television shows and following professional athletic teams can most definitely have a negative impact on the quality of life for the following reasons.

First and foremost, the majority of individuals would agree with the notion that staying glued to the television screen because of sports programs can engender a myriad of disadvantages. The main reason behind this rationale is that unless a people's livelihood or career is directly related to sports, spending any amount of time on watching sports television program is unnecessary and meaningless. In other words, if people aren't working as coaches, professional athletes, sports agents, or even physicians, they have no logical reason to invest a lot of time in watching sports programs. To illustrate more thoroughly, my older brother jason is currently a sophomore in university and has been a Yankees fanatic ever since he was in middle school. Derek Jeter was always his favorite athlete and Jason even played baseball all throughout his high school years since he wanted to make it into the major leagues and become the next Jeter for the Yankees. Unfortunately, my brother didn't have enough God-given talents to compete against those who have unbelievable innate skills and already spent most of their lives playing the sports. Hence, he ended up majoring in business and is not playing baseball anymore. However, Jason still spends several hours of his day to watch highlights of Yankees' games and analysts who predict the teams's season. Things have gone so out of control since Jason still didn't give up on his dreams that his grade point average was abysmal. My parents eventually drove to his dormitory before the winter vacation and took out his television so that he would start prioritizing his academics. By personally witnessing this all transpire right in front of my eyes, I came to the realization that allocating too much time to watching sports television shows has numerous downsides.

On top of this, following one's favorite sports team too closely can result in unfavorable ramifications. In the eyes of many people in present day society, overconsumption is a serious issue that's making consumers waste their hard-earned money on trivial and useless goods. Professional sports teams are fully aware of this phenomenon and they try to maximize the amount of revenue generated from their fan-base by encouraging them to purchase a seemingly endless selection of souvenirs and merchandise. Needless to say, avid and loyal fans of professional sports teams wind up accumulating too many unwanted and meaningless commodities due to the love they have for these teams. A great example of this would be the souvenir shop in all professional sports teams' stadiums. I am sure we have at least one friend, family member, or acquaintance who has one too many coffee mugs or cutlery with their favorite sports teams' logos on them. It is not rare to see people walking on the streets with sports teams names on their clothes, which is evidence that individuals in our generation are willingly spending their money to show their support. These days, there are many news articles and stories about crazed sports fans who literally collect hundreds or even thousands of their favorite athletes' uniforms, memorabilia, bobble-heads, and posters. Said fans become protagonists of news stories because their choices are mind-blowing and unfathomable for average people. Therefore, the fact that even one of these people actually exist is evidence that following one's favorite sports team too closely can be detrimental.

In summation, yes, it is virtually impossible to provide a completely satisfying answer to an open-ended questions. Although the jury may be out on this given essay topic, we can come to a mutual agreement that spending a lot of time watching sports programs and following one's favorite sports team can have a negative effect mostly due to the reasons and details mentioned above.
