1. I'm sorry if ~ (~라면 죄송해요)

 

자신이 의도한 것은 아니지만 무심코 저지른 실수, 부적절한 행동에 대해 이해를 구하는 표현이에요. 일부러 하지 않는 것을 상대방에게 납득시키는 거죠. 상황에 따라서는 약간 비꼬는 말로 쓸 수 있어요.

A: Why are you packing your things?
B: I quit my job today.
A: What? That's news to me.
B: I'm sorry if this comes as a surprise.

사소하게는 친구에게 섭섭한 말을 할 때부터 직원을 해고하는 상황에 이르기까지 안 좋은 사건이나 소식을 전해야 할 때 말을 꺼내는 표현이죠. I'm sorry to tell you that ~ 으로 바꾸어도 같은 의미랍니다.

A: Did you read through my report?
B: Yes, I did.
A: What did you think of it?
B: I'm sorry to say that it's not clear.
