1. I'm sorry that~ (~해서 죄송해요/유감이에요)

 

잘못한 일에 대한 사과나 불행한 일에 대한 유감을 표현하는 패턴이에요. 미안함이나 안타까움의 정도를 좀 더 강하게 표현하고 싶을 때는 I'm very sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm really sorry.와 같이 말하면 됩니다.

 

■ 예시

A: Did you get the promotion?
B: No. They offered it to one of my coworkers.
A: I'm sorry that it didn't work out.
B: That's okay, maybe next time.

 

■ 예문

I'm sorry that they broke up.	그들이 헤어져서 유감이에요.
I'm sorry that I couldn't bring your son.	당신의 아들을 못 데려와서 죄송해요.
I'm sorry that it took so long to call you.	연락하는 데 너무 오래 걸려서 죄송해요.

2. I'm sorry, but ~ (죄송하지만 ~)

 

상대방이 기대하는 답변을 해줄 수 없을 때 공손하고 정중하게 자신의 의사를 전달하는 표현이에요. 부탁이나 제안을 거절할 때, 상대방과 의견이 다를 때, 부정적인 소식을 전할 때 처럼 내가 하려는 말이 상대방이 기대하는 답변이 아니라고 판단되면 I'm sorry, but ~을 씁니다.

 

■ 예시

A: Can I see both of you at my place tomorrow?
B: I'm sorry, but we can't make it.
A: You never come to my parties.
B: WE both have to work.
