미국대학 교수님께 컨택 메일 보내기

미국 대학원에 가기로 마음 먹었다면 어떤 학교로 갈 지 결정을 해야할 것이다. 특히 대학원의 경우 Research가 큰 비중을 차지하기 때문에 대부분 전공별로 유명하거나 세부 전공에서 유명한 대가를 찾아 연락을 취하고 입학을 하는 과정으로 진행이 된다. 전공별 Top 100 List 학교에 학과 홈페이지에 들어가서 각 Faculty list를 확인하고 세부적으로 어떤 전공과 연구를 진행하고 있는지, Lab의 상황은 어떠한지, 구성원들은 어떻게 되어있는지 각 Private homepage 에서 확인할 수도 있다. 이렇게 세부적으로 다 조사를 해도 되고, 광범위하게 조사를 한 뒤 본인이 특히나 관심을 가지고 있는 교수님의 상황을 찾아보는 것도 좋다고 생각한다.

1. Contact List 구성과 E-mail

 

 

​나의 경우엔 Google scholar citiation profile에서 내 연구의 key word를 먼저 검색하였다. 그러면 Keyword를 설정해놓은 여러 연구자들이 나오는데 인용수가 많은 순서대로 나왔다. 그리고 그 중 미국대학에서 근무 중인 교수님을 모두 List-up 했다. 하나의 연구분야에서도 세부분야가 나누어지기 때문에 나와 관련된 분야에서 조금 떨어진 연구를 하는 분들을 제외하여 Contact email을 보내봐야겠다고 생각한 20분의 교수님들 추려냈다. Contact mail의 기본적인 틀을 구성한 뒤에 각 교수님 마다 세부적인 논문내용을 언급한다던지 Research 내용을 조금씩 달리하여 보냈다. Contact email 보낼 때 CV와 함께 보내는데, email의 내용이 간결해야 한다고 주장하는 분들도 많으시다. 하지만 나는 장황하지 않을 정도의 내용으로 해서 상세하게 적기 위해 노력했다.

 

 

문단의 구성은 간단한 나의 소개, Research Proposal, Past Research 소개, 맺음말 순서로 했다. 나의 소개에서 내가 누구이며, 어떠한 목적으로 당신에게 메일을 보내는지 작성하였다. Research proposal은 어떤 research 분야에 관심이 있고, 당신의 어떤 논문에 대해서 읽어보았는데 어떠한 점에서 인상깊었고 어떠한 방향으로 연구를 제안하고 싶다 라는 식으로 적어나갔다. 그리고 Past research는 내가 해왔던 연구들에 대해 간략히 소개하였다. 맺음말은 간단히 끝 인사라고 생각하면 될 것이다. 아래의 E-mail은 직접 내가 보냈던 email 들이다.

특별히 관심있는 교수님들께는 논문을 읽어본 뒤 좀 세부적으로 보냈고, 어느정도 관련이 있지만 크게 관심이 없었던 교수님들께는 솔직히 복사붙여넣기를 해서 보낸 부분도 있었다. 1~2명에게 보내는 것도 아니고 20분의 교수님들께 보내려고 하니 많은 논문을 읽고 이해하고 그 내용을 또 이메일에 녹여내는 것이 쉬운 일은 아니였다. 그러한 노력을 통해 더 많은 긍정적인 feedback을 받아내는 것도 중요하다. 나는 그렇게 하지 못했지만...나의 경우에는 선택과 집중을 했던 것 같다.

​2. Reply from the professor

 

 

이런식으로 메일을 보내고 나면 이제 답장을 기다리는 일만 남았는데, 대부분의 경우 답장이 오지 않는다. 바빠서, 메일을 못읽어서, 관심이 없어서 등등 여러가지 이유로 답장이 잘 오는 경우가 적다. 나의 경우에도 마찬가지였다. 총 20분에게 보낸 메일에서 9명의 교수님은 끝내 답장이 오지 않았다. 답장해주신 교수님은 General한 답변이나 아예 거절한다는 내용, 그리고 긍정적인 내용의 답변들이 왔다.

3. Contact 시기?

 

 

​Contact 시기는 사람마다 다들 다른 것 같다. 어느 시점이 좋은지도 잘 모르겠다. 나중에 미국에 가게 된다면 교수님께 직접 물어보는 것이 도움이 되려나..? 아무튼 나의 경우에는 6~7월에 Contact email을 많이 보냈다. 빠르면 9월부터 원서접수를 받는 곳도 있고 또한 자리가 있는 경우에 선제적으로 Contact하여 자리를 잡는 것이 유리하다고 생각했다. 하지만 일찍 한 덕분에 아직까지 자리가 날지 말지 모르겠다는 메일도 많이 받았다. 많은 분들이 지원시점에서 하는데, 지원이 다 끝난 뒤에 하는 분들도 계신다. 이것은 어떻게 정답이 있다고 말하기 어려울 것 같다. 나는 일찍 contact을 한 뒤에 반응이 없으면 재 contact도 하였기 때문에 이 시기에만 해야한다 라고 주장할 수는 없다.

 

 

​아무쪼록 내가 이런 학생임을 어필함과 동시에 교수님의 needs를 충족시켜 긍정적인 feedback을 받은 뒤 합격으로 이어지는 최종적인 목표를 이루기 위해서 contact은 꼭 필요한 것이라 개인적으로 생각한다.

 

 

하지만, 답장이 잘 안오는 경향이 많기 때문에 이러하더라도 너무 실망하지 않도록해야 멘탈관리가  된다!
